After a suction curettage

Do you have a question after the treatment?

We can be reached by telephone from Mondays – Thursdays 8:15 am – 16:15 pm and on Fridays from 8:15 am – 12:15 pm.

Outside our opening hours, please contact the GP on duty.

An abortion is a medically safe procedure

Termination of pregnancy in our clinic is a medically safe procedure and the risk of complications is extremely low. In the first period after the intervention there are a few things you should bear in mind. Immediately after an abortion the risk of a complication is greatest. You are advised to take it easy for a few days and get plenty of rest. The sudden hormonal changes may make you feel tired and unbalanced. After the treatment, the body temperature often rises slightly. Without further complaints, a temperature below 38.5°C is not alarming.

What can you expect after curettage?

  • Blood loss can vary greatly between 10 and 14 days after the termination of pregnancy and may be accompanied by clots and abdominal cramps.
  • Blood loss in the first few days after curettage is usually moderate to none, and increases on the 2nd -3rd
  • The blood loss can sometimes last until the next menstrual period.
  • If you have had an IUD placed after the treatment, these symptoms may last longer.

What should you do and not do?

  • You were given an antibiotic at the clinic (two tablets of azithromycin 500 mg). To prevent infection, we recommend that you do NOT use tampons or menstrual cup, DO NOT have vaginal sex, DO NOT swim and DO NOT bathe for 10-14 days after the abortion.
  • In case of pain, you can take a painkiller (500 mg naproxen, 400 mg ibuprofen or 50 mg diclofenac). If necessary, you can supplement this with 1000 mg of paracetamol.

When to contact us?

We advise you to contact the clinic during opening hours or your own GP/general practice outside opening hours if

  • you have a fever (38.5 degrees or higher) that lasts longer than 24 hours.
  • you have persistent, severe pain that does not respond to the painkillers mentioned above.

Contraception

If you choose the following as future contraception:

  • an IUD.
Our doctors will place an IUD of your choice by appointment, free of charge, within two months of the abortion treatment.  The IUD itself is at your own expense.
  • The contraceptive pill.
You must start taking it on the same evening of part two of the treatment or on the day after.
  • a hormone implant.
You have the option of having this inserted free of charge by our doctor on day one of the treatment. The hormone implant itself is at your own expense.
